Living Donor Day is April 2, 2025. It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the lifesaving gifts made by living kidney donors.

Living organ donors can save the lives of family members, friends or even strangers. Last year, more than 7,000 people in the U.S. became living organ donors. Most of them — 6,418 to be exact — gave a kidney.

A kidney from a living donor offers patients an alternative to years of dialysis and time on the transplant waiting list. The living donor’s remaining kidney will increase in size, doing the work of two healthy kidneys.

The kidney is the most needed organ: More than 90,000 people in the U.S. are waiting for a kidney transplant, including nearly 7,000 in New York State.

Living kidney donation: In 2024, 6,418 people in the U.S. became living kidney donors, including 454 people in New York State.
